Mailinator

A throwaway email address is useful. It is a slight hassle to sign up for, but well worth the amount of time it can save you by intercepting spam that would otherwise be going to your legitimate address.

I heard about Mailinator from Simon Willison's blog. You don't need to sign up for it. Just specify AnyAddress@mailinator.com and it will work. If you want to check the email, go to Mailinator's website and type in whatever fake address you put up. Pretty cool.

For a more sophisticated, more secure deal than that one, try Spam Gourmet. You create the email address on the fly conforming to a certain specification, and it's set up to forward them to another account. After a specified number of emails have come into that address, it treats the rest as spam and EATS them. Very cool idea.
