Reading Music
I was sight-reading some Debussy in Minh-An's room when I started thinking about how I read music. Sometimes people ask me, "How can you read all those notes so quickly?" And the answer is: I don't. Not even all the ones I play correctly, heh. There's more to reading music than reading notes.

Abandoning Postel's Law
To me, this situation [Nader's run for presidency] reminds me somewhat tangentially to much of the debate surrounding Postel's Law applied to web browsing. Postel's Law, to be phrased a different way, is: be pragmatic in what you expect from other people, but adhere as strictly as possible to your own ideals.

What Price Inclusiveness?
"No Child Left Behind", to borrow the words from Bush's campaign, is an admirable goal, but I really have to disagree with one of the ways of achieving it. There is the hard way; helping those behind get up. And then there's the easy way; not letting the others get ahead. It seems to be sort of the trend, towards what people term "equal education". Mr. Schooler and Mrs. Stuckey from OHS(Olympia High School) mentioned it.

Finding Oneself
I have never been very comfortable with the notion of finding oneself. It's the concept that perhaps you have been living some sort of a fake life, or that hidden beneath layers of something there is the real you, just waiting to get out. It does make a pretty good expression, though, because it does seem like there is a sort of discovery process that goes on about figuring out what one enjoys doing and values most.

Autumn
Autumn is my favorite season, though not because my birthday lies within its grasp. The birthday does make it better, though, and I thank the people who made mine so good. I like autumn for the return of rain, the briskness in the air, All Hallow's Eve, and most of all, its elegant acceptance of death. It is often easy to enjoy growth, life, progress—but I believe it just as important to find comfort in the receding of things.

Procedural Programming Analogy
I have always found it somewhat difficult to really describe to non-programming people the difference between object-oriented and procedural programming. Specifically, I never thought of a clear way to explain the disadvantage of procedural code. In An Introduction to Programming and Object Oriented Design Using Java by Jaime Niño, they use the analogy of a Rube Goldberg device.
