Finished

September 4th, 2008

As of today I’m not a college student anymore.  My professor just gave me a grade on my final project (4).  Yeah, I know I said I graduated in spring, and I would have if (organization) weren’t acting like douchbags for three months.  But yay!  I’m done now!

Today I sold the old toaster oven to a couple of freshman moving in for the fall.  Jeff and I have a grownup toaster oven now.  How symbolic is that?

I missed the biggest gay event of the year…

June 30th, 2008

For an even bigger, gayer event.

That is to say, I missed Seattle Pride for San Francisco Pride.  It was outrageous.  Marriage just got equalized down there, so everyone was pretty excited.

I also visited Madge, which was also a blast.  She’s moving back up to Seattle soon, I’ll only have to go a few miles to visit her!  Yay!

Formal. Again.

June 1st, 2008

And for the last time since Jeff has graduated.  Dinner was lovely, but the dance itself was kinda lame.  We had it in a really nice place the last few years, but this year it was shoved into a tiny windowless room in the Bellevue events center with a malfunctioning PA system trying to be a sound system and a sporadically shitty smoke machine.  I don’t like smoke machines anyway, and this one was making random amounts of smoke between none and way too much.  And since they couldn’t get the lap top to play music for awhile the first few songs were played from Marshall’s cell phone over the mike.  Surprisingly good quality for cell phone over mike.  Mostly terrible songs though.  I did enjoy chatting with some friends there and dancing some.

Oh, and as we drove out of the parking garage after dinner, a shower of yellow/white goo mysteriously rained down on Jeff’s car.  What is that all over the windshield?  I looked back to see that it had splattered all the way onto the rear window, and that the leaky pipe we had driven under was labeled “grease waste.”  EWWW!  Of course, it only decided to leak right when we were driving under it and stopped immediately after.  It smelled terrible, so we had to drive around looking for a carwash before we could go to the dance.   Didn’t miss too much as it turned out.  Side note: I am thankful we weren’t in a convertible..

Important announcement (we’re serious this time)

May 7th, 2008

Jeff and I are now engaged.  officially.  not like that rumor mill from before…

We went down to Portland for the weekend.  On Saturday, after a wonderful lunch of Dim Sum, Jeff handed me an envelope and told me I was on my own until dinner, which would be at 5 at an unknown location.  The envelope contained two maps of Portland and a laminated cut out of part of one map with a location indicated and a clue to get the next envelope.  To finish the long and complex puzzle, I had to go back to the jewelry store where we bought the ring a couple weeks ago and and pick up the second envelope, go to the Saturday Market and ask the catnip pillow lady if catnip works on a catfish, go to Finnagins and buy one bouncyball, and go to Powell’s books and ask about dog acupuncture.  Each of the envelops also contained a list of locations around Portland, i.e. “Taylor between 9th and 11th.”  The last clue read, “We’re meeting at a familiar restaurant located on the corner of the first letter of the second word.”  So I traced all the locations on the map with the sharpie Jeff advised me to bring and discovered the secret answer:

I had a few setbacks, but I did manage to finish well before dinner.  I got a little sidetracked in the Saturday Market and bought a necklace.  Also, there was a crazy guy who came up and talked to me, and I thought he might be working for Jeff, so I asked him if he had an envelope, and he said, “Ah-hah, I don’t, but I know where you can get one.  Come with me!”  So I followed him, and he led me to Powell’s.  It turned out one of the envelopes was in Powells, but the guy didn’t have anything to do with it.

Since I got done early, I joined Jeff in a tea lounge and had some great tea.  Jeff was waiting with roses.

Then we went to Oba and ordered some food and wine.  Jeff did the whole one knee thing right after the appetizers came, and of course I said yes.  Then the waitstaff started coming over and congratulating us.  After dessert, the manager came to our table, congratulated us, and said “dinner is on us tonight.”  Naturally, we left a nice tip.

My reasons for getting a sapphire:

1.  prettier than a white stone

2.  the whole blood diamond thing makes me uncomfortable

3.  diamond prices artificially inflated by debeers

4.  recent tradition of sapphires in both KA and my mom’s side of the family.

But the main reason is I love the blue.
Oh, by the way, here’s the ring:

Garfield minus garfield

April 10th, 2008

“Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life?”

this is the funniest thing i’ve read in awhile.  who knew it would be better without the cat?  and yet so much more depressing.

anyway, this is what a week of garfield would look like without him:

3rd Anniversary

March 10th, 2008

That’s right. It’s been three years for me and Jeff. To celebrate, I took the whole day off work. In the morning we went “rock” climbing at vertical world, and we made it all the way to the level 0 difficulty course. Which was a major step up from the 0- course. So now I’m really sore. Then we had lunch here and hung out for awhile, and then we went to Argosy Cruises for dinner. It’s a ship that sails around Elliot bay and serves dinner. The food was excellent, and there were great views of the Seattle skyline. There was also a live band, but they weren’t quite as excellent as one might expect.

Oh, and Jeff got me a beautiful new watch. Which was great, because my old watch is made of rubber and smells of clam.

Since I’m far too lazy to upload them twice, cruise pictures are available here:

Red roses on the black market

February 13th, 2008

Roses.3.jpg

From the UK Telegraph:

“Saudi Arabia’s religious police have banned the sale of red roses ahead of Valentine’s Day.

Every year officials visit florists a few days before Feb 14 to issue warnings on red items, which are widely seen as symbols of love, according to local newspapers.

The Commission raids shops on the eve of Valentine’s Day, which it sees as an encouragement of relations outside of wedlock, to ensure that the ban is being carried out.

According to the Saudi Gazette, the ban has resulted in a blossoming black market for red roses. One man, who claimed to run an underground flower shop out of his flat, said he could make as much as SAR20-30 (£2.70- £4) per rose, when the normal price is SAR5-7 (68p - £1).”

Happy Valentine’s day everyone!
