Important announcement (we’re serious this time)
Jeff and I are now engaged. officially. not like that rumor mill from before…
We went down to Portland for the weekend. On Saturday, after a wonderful lunch of Dim Sum, Jeff handed me an envelope and told me I was on my own until dinner, which would be at 5 at an unknown location. The envelope contained two maps of Portland and a laminated cut out of part of one map with a location indicated and a clue to get the next envelope. To finish the long and complex puzzle, I had to go back to the jewelry store where we bought the ring a couple weeks ago and and pick up the second envelope, go to the Saturday Market and ask the catnip pillow lady if catnip works on a catfish, go to Finnagins and buy one bouncyball, and go to Powell’s books and ask about dog acupuncture. Each of the envelops also contained a list of locations around Portland, i.e. “Taylor between 9th and 11th.” The last clue read, “We’re meeting at a familiar restaurant located on the corner of the first letter of the second word.” So I traced all the locations on the map with the sharpie Jeff advised me to bring and discovered the secret answer:

I had a few setbacks, but I did manage to finish well before dinner. I got a little sidetracked in the Saturday Market and bought a necklace. Also, there was a crazy guy who came up and talked to me, and I thought he might be working for Jeff, so I asked him if he had an envelope, and he said, “Ah-hah, I don’t, but I know where you can get one. Come with me!” So I followed him, and he led me to Powell’s. It turned out one of the envelopes was in Powells, but the guy didn’t have anything to do with it.
Since I got done early, I joined Jeff in a tea lounge and had some great tea. Jeff was waiting with roses.
Then we went to Oba and ordered some food and wine. Jeff did the whole one knee thing right after the appetizers came, and of course I said yes. Then the waitstaff started coming over and congratulating us. After dessert, the manager came to our table, congratulated us, and said “dinner is on us tonight.” Naturally, we left a nice tip.
My reasons for getting a sapphire:
1. prettier than a white stone
2. the whole blood diamond thing makes me uncomfortable
3. diamond prices artificially inflated by debeers
4. recent tradition of sapphires in both KA and my mom’s side of the family.
But the main reason is I love the blue.
Oh, by the way, here’s the ring:

Congratulations! Cool that you are avoiding natural diamonds. The ring is pretty.
